Historical Headed (Nelson) Stud Steel Grade

Historical Headed (Nelson) Stud Steel Grade

(OP)
I'm involved in the remodel of a building that was built under the AISC 8th edition (built in 1983), where the strength of steel studs for composite action is given by a table, as opposed to a formula.  With the remodel I need to check the composite beams under current code, which is, in part, based upon the grade of the shear studs.  Does anyone know what the typical steel grade of studs was at this time?

Thanks.

RE: Historical Headed (Nelson) Stud Steel Grade

Our catalogue is from 1990, so its probably pretty close. They used ASTM A108 steel with 50 ksi yield and 60 ksi tensile for their headed studs.

60ksi would be correct for that time period.  65ksi is typical now.

Thanks for your help.  The current code also shows studs as ASTM A108, but with a 65ksi tensile stress.  Has A108 changed in content leading to the 5ksi increase, or has the standard simply been updated with more current testing values?

I would spot test the welds of the studs to the steel to make sure. Some times they are hand welded.
