Wood 2x12s to HSS8x8 column w/o welding

The client is asking for a wood to steel connection without the use of welding.  We have researched using 3/8" diameter screws in order to make the connection but do not have any experience doing this.  We've looked at using Simpson joist hangers, but they do not provide any support for screwed connections.

Does anyone have any thoughts or experiences making this kind of connection?

bgatto - do you have any documentation or experience for screwing the hanger into a steel column?

RE: Wood 2x12s to HSS8x8 column w/o welding

Check simposon catalog. It has some screws that go into structural steel. Otherwise, also check HILTI and/or ITW Buildex catalogs.

Can you thru bolt or use something like a Hollo-Bolt?  Perhaps shear clip angles outside the wood?  Or a seat bolted below the wood?

This might be more than the client wants though.  Are they ok with some drilling and bolting into/thru the steel?

RE: Wood 2x12s to HSS8x8 column w/o welding

I would use through bolts or TEKS Screws.

Yeah, we looked at through bolts and Hollo bolts but were hoping for someone's experience with screws.

Larryhd2 - do you have any experience using TEKS screws to an HSS?

RE: Wood 2x12s to HSS8x8 column w/o welding

What kind of loads do you have on these?  If high loading, use through-bolts and angle clips.  If lightly loaded, either TEKS screws or powder actuated fasteners for clip angles or joist buckets.

Holo-bolt or self-drilling screw would do the job. The second one is most common in my country. The other option is to design produce something that looks like the part that I showed you and weld it to the steel part.

RE: Wood 2x12s to HSS8x8 column w/o welding

I think your client is wasting your time.  There are very good reasons to weld in this case.  With proper planning, and a decent fabricator this is cost effective.  If it is for aesthetic reasons I get it.   If not, it looks a lot like saving a nickel at a fab shop to spend a quarter in the field.

You can shoot the brackets on too, but if your client does not like the idea of a welder, I am sure they do not want to buy the hilti tools.
