repad material need to be normalized?

repad material need to be normalized?

Hello,

If a vessel to be fabricated needs to be impact tested (materials), does the material for the saddle wear plates also need to be tested?

Also if I am using SA-516-70N material for the shells/heads, does the repad material for nozzles also need to be Normalized?

RE: repad material need to be normalized?

First, it kind of depends on your Code of Construction.

Second, it may depend on your weld procedures as well.

Regards,

Mike

Second point - one must evaluate pressure retaining and non-pressure retaining service applications. For repad material - pressure retaining service conditions should apply and so this material may require impact testing for service.

For wear plates placed on the OD of the vessel, these are not pressure retaining. Welding procedure qualification regarding attachment welds may apply.

As stated above by SnTMan, review the Code of Construction requirements.

Thanks folks,

The vessel is built to Sec. VIII.  -39deg Celcius is the MDMT.  Not sure if wear plates need to be impact tested by manufacturer.  Also, do the repads need to be normalized, or is SA-516-70 acceptable?

If you could point me in the right direction in regards to where to look in ASME code, would help too.  I have been scouring Sec VII and Sec II, but can't locate anything.  Thanks.

RE: repad material need to be normalized?

As metengr said, repads are pressure retaining. You can evaluate exemptions from impact testing per UCS-66.

Wear pads are generally not considered pressure retaining, however you may need to evaluate your design to see if they are "essential to the structural integrity of the vessel" and go from there.

Then look at your weld procedures. Weld procedures of one of my previous employers did not permit welding normalized to non-normalized.

Regards,

Mike
