MS20470AD6 - Allowables

MS20470AD6 - Allowables

(OP)
Do you know the allowable shear (if possible also tension) value for rivet MS20470AD6 (3/16) with protruding head and sheet thickness 0.05inch (2024T3/T42)?

Mr. Niu provides in his book the tables, but only up to size 5/32 (pg. 286). Btw. the allowables in this book seems to me very conservative (e.g comparing to hand calculated allowables or data acc. Bruhn). Could you recommend another reference than Niu/Bruhn for rivet allowables?

Thanks for support!

RE: MS20470AD6 - Allowables

The shear strength for the MS20470AD rivet is available in MIL-
HDBK-5 available at the DOD website.  This publication has been superceeded by the MMPDS.  Anyway, the values in handbook 5 should still be close.

Cheers

RE: MS20470AD6 - Allowables

from AR-MMPDS-01, shear allowable = 0.97*860 = 834 lbs
bearing allowable = 955*1.3 = 1141 lbs (not critical)

from McCombs supplement to Bruhn, table A20, tension allowable = 520 lbs

Thanks for data. I checked the allowables again - it was a mistake from my side. The correlation between Bruhn and Niu is pretty good (approx. 2%). I was comparing protruding head and countersunk head. This can never lead to correct results ...
