Variable Speed Motor Driven Compressor

Variable Speed Motor Driven Compressor

Variable Speed Motor Driven Compressor

(OP)
Hi Everyone,

That the trip speeds for the steam turbines, gas turbines, constant speed motors are defined in the API 617 standard for centrifugal compressors; this parameter is nowhere defined for VFD motor driven centrifugal compressors.

Can anyone please suggest what values in relation to the max. operating speed (100% speed) shall be assumed for the maximum continuous speed and trip speed for such VFD motor driven compressors.

Thanks.

RE: Variable Speed Motor Driven Compressor

Trip speed only needs to be defined when there is a possibility of run away condition. I am not sure that a VFD is subject to a runaway condition. VFDs are highly programmable and one can define trips based on so many different conditions.

Time is an illusion. Now is the only thing there is.

RE: Variable Speed Motor Driven Compressor

the vfd can put out fequencies higher than their input frequency, so you need to program the PLC output frequency to match the compressors rated max RPM.
