thickness of an SA 105 flange weld neck

(OP)
Hi,

what is (or where can I find) the wall thickness of the weldneck for an API 5ksi flange (usually made of SA105 grade material).

I have a WPS that qualifies for base metal upto 0.944" and I want to make sure that thickness of the weldneck does not exceed 0.944". Any answer with references will be really appreciated.

Thank you.

Thanks unclesyd,
I did see some good information about weldneck flanges and flanges with threaded outlets, but it says nothing about actual dimensions (wall thickness) of the out-lets.

RE: thickness of an SA 105 flange weld neck

The pipe wall thickness sets the limits on welding.  If the flange is too thick the thickness is corrected by a taper on the weldneck to match the pipe wall. Also for most weldneck you can call out the bore to match the pipebore if the dimensions are under the bore called out by the flange class.

mysarah,
As stanweld has said the weldneck thickness will be governed by the pipe thickness. For example 300# Sch 80, 150# Sch 40 etc, etc
Cheers,

Thanks everyone, was very helpful.

So this is not about the weld neck, it's about getting a desired pipe and machining or buying a weld neck to match the pipe wall?

mysarah,
You are correct.  It's usually easiest from a fabrication standpoint to match the bore of your weldneck to the bore of your mating pipe/cylinder.

Remember too that you are welding at the pipe-to-flange point, not further down the fitting where the wall thickness may be thicker.

So, if your procedure qualifies the weld for up to 0.944 thickness, then the fitting (weld neck) thickness is critically limited only at the joint, where both the pipe and the fitting prep can (at most) be 0.944.

See API-6A 20th ed for information about weldnecks, welding, etc.
