Collector Ring Vibration

Collector Ring Vibration

Collector Ring Vibration

(OP)
To measure vibration on the collector rings of my generators, I am using an insulated rod touching the top of my brush rigging. The vibration monitor is the CSI 2130. My question is how man mils is normal and at what point (mils) is there too much vibration? My generator is turning at 164 rpms. Thanks for any help.

RE: Collector Ring Vibration

I am assuming that you are measuring vibration of the brushes as a way to assess the condition of the slip rings.

In this case, a more direct approach would be to use a dial indicator to measure the condition of the slip rings. If the total indicated run-out is too great or the rings are scored or pitted then resurfacing is necessary. Of course, the measurements and inspections are done when the generator is not running.

Slip rings that are in proper condition will have a smooth finish, will be concentric with the shaft, will have a run-out of less than a few thousands of an inch, and will produce no vibration at the slip rings.

Also, if you are seeing any arcing at the slip rings, that is an indication of problems that must be addressed regardless of vibration levels at the brushes.

Useful manual about slip-ring troubleshooting you can find here.
