Connection 2x6 to HSS column
Connection 2x6 to HSS column
(OP)
We have a HSS 8x8x5/8 that has to have vertical 2x6s attached to it on two sides so that plywood panels can be connected to the 2x6s. Initially I thought of putting shop welded studs along the two faces so that 2x6 can be attached via these studs but I think its an impractical approach as the nut on the stud would have to be countersunk within the 2x6.
A 5/8" thickness seems too thick to get tek screw through plus I am afraid that the tek screw may shoot right through the wood.
Any other ideas I should be considering?

If you can't get the second 2x due to limitations in your geometry, then I'd use self tapping screws with pre-drilled starter holes through the tube walls.

As EOR's we should take the responsibility to design our structures to support the components we allow in our design per that industry standards.

I met with them last week and have attached their latest catalog info. The company is UK based, and is represented in North America by Steelwork Connections. www.UCCI.ca
I have used the products twice for structural steel work. They are presently working on their ASTM standards. AISC recognizes them in the 13th Edition. But, without the ASTM Standard they are not defined in RCSC spec and AISC spec. Capacities and properties are specified manufacturer.

If so, then the 2X6's are just a nailer for the plywood overlap of the panel.
I just use Nelson sill plate anchors - threaded welded studs as you mentioned - and provide drilled holes in the panel to accept the bolt heads. If you set in the bolt head on a 2X6, there will be less than an inch for the anchor to bear on. Use it all the time.

If you like the idea of threaded studs, you can get threaded studs from Nelson stud. It will not have any head. You can weld threaded rods onto the steel also, but a stud welder is about 10times faster and it is a full strength connection whereas a fillet is not unless you spec that. The carpenters will prefer installing with hilti nails, since it can be time consuming to locate and drill wood plates for imperfect threaded studs.
