Pre-emptive crack sealing?

Pre-emptive crack sealing?

Pre-emptive crack sealing?

(OP)
Our department commissioner and I were driving down a road freshly resurfaced with HMA, and he saw a noticeable cold joint down the centerline.

He wondered, what would happen if we crack-sealed the new joint now, rather than when it started to open up a few years from now? Could we prevent or delay later deterioration now, rather than reacting to it later? Would it be cost-effective?

Has anyone ever seen any research on the topic? Would it be worth doing an experiment with a few test and control sections?

Just curious.

RE: Pre-emptive crack sealing?

ACte...is this a conventional crown or inverted crown?  If inverted, I would definitely opt for sealing now.

For conventional crown, it is debatable, but if there is a distinct joint separation, I would seal it.

Yes, it is worth doing a little study...formal or informal.
