Does anyone have experience integrating laser scanning with Solid Edge ST3?  Any tips/recommendations would be appreciated!

RE: Point Clouds in Solid Edge ST3

We did have to do one at a previous job but it was hard work.
The data had been converted into AutoCad but we had difficulty getting that into SE because of model positioning and format problems. (It was a very large site with a model datum several km from the actual scan data)
The way I eventually did it was to download a trial of SpaceClaim, import the dwg into that, move it and then export it as STEP which went into SE quite easily.

I think there have been several posts on this before and I suggested Sycode Software which has tools for importing and converting various formats. I can't say if or how well they work but they do allow free trials.

Thanks for the response.  Did you import point cloud data or polygon mesh data?  Is one preferred over the other?

RE: Point Clouds in Solid Edge ST3

This is a common topic and the short answer is SE doesn't like point clouds and Siemens doesn't care.

SE will only open polygon data. STL is the only option.

If your geometer allows it run the point cloud through Raindrop Geomagic or something like it and turn it into surfaces. You will be much happier in SE that way.

RE: Point Clouds in Solid Edge ST3

The point data had already been imported into AutoCad and that was the file we got.
It was getting from the AutoCad file into SE that caused the problem because of some of the element types and, we thought, the actual spacial position of the model.
SpaceClaim just did that without any fuss.
