1030 Tube/Pipe

1030 Tube/Pipe

Hi everyone,

I am working on a weld procedure to weld A-516 Gr70 (P1 G2 ASTM material) to a forged 1030/1035 tube.  1030 and 1035 are not classified, so my procedure must use 1030 or 1035 to qualify it.  My problem is I have been unable to find any 1030 or 1035 tube that is large enough.  We need a 1-1/2" wall thickness to qualify use for the welded thickness on the end product.

This procedure will also be ABS approved, so it needs to be done on tube/pipe rather than plate.  We disagree with this due to the size tube we are welding (28" OD), but would rather qualify with a tube rather than arguing with ABS for weeks over whether or not a plate will qualify a tube that large...

Do any of you have any idea where I can find 1030 or 1035 tube in the 1-1/2" wall range and at least 12" OD?

Thanks!

David Cox

RE: 1030 Tube/Pipe

For that size of diameter, usually it is welded pipe, but your wall is also quite heavy for welded pipe. So I think you may have to consider macihine a bar stock or forging.

Thanks for the info.  Machining a bar stock would be OK I suppose.  Forging is a last resort due to time and cost.

Any idea where I could find the bar stock?

RE: 1030 Tube/Pipe

You have to call around to find that chemistry, grade and size. Just remember it is not a516 any more, try a36, that still can give you 70ksi tensile strength.
