Tensile Strength of Rebar Reinforcement

Tensile Strength of Rebar Reinforcement

Tensile Strength of Rebar Reinforcement

(OP)
Hi all struc eng,

BS 4449 and Annex C of EC2 gives a table on the characteristic values/properties of reinforcement (tensile strengths).

For example: Grade 500B : Rm/Re is > 1.08

On BS 4483 and EN 10080 another table is given having a Minimum and Maximum absolute values. This time for:

Grade 500B: Rm/Re is 1.06

Therefore if one had to test a rebar having Rm/Re is 1.07, should one grade it as 500A or 500B? Which table shall one you as a lower limit?

RE: Tensile Strength of Rebar Reinforcement

Is BS4449 for bars and BS4483 for mesh?  (I don't have a copy of BS4483)

Assuming ductility is a good thing, then I would read Table 4 of BS4449 as the minimum Rm/Re that it needs to achieve to be grade B500B.

In your case if you have a bar (not mesh) I would grade it as B500A to BS4449 because it doesn't meet the requirement for B500B.

This link might be of some use:  http://www.dft.gov.uk/ha/standards/ians/pdfs/ian70.pdf  although it says you can't grade a 'mesh', only the bars that form the mesh

What is your opinion if it was a mesh not just a rebar?

Should one use the table of BS4483 or table 4 of BS4449.
