Fastener Selection
Fastener Selection
(OP)
I'm trying to select a fastener to be used to attach a removable hardwood molding for an aircraft cabin cabinet. The screws are partially screwed into the composite panel inserts such that the screws can slide into keyhole slots but the molding will remain tight to the cabinet. Would self-locking screws (such as NAS1190) be a must in this situation? I am not completely sure when self-locking screws are appropriately used / not used in aircraft engineering. Any advice would be much appreciated.

If the fastener length is adjusted properly, it will get some preload from a standard keylock due to the taper on the engaging part, which should prevent the screw from backing out. This is one of those process dependent things; your confidence in the techs doing the installation will affect your confidence in the design.
