DIN Steel

(OP)
Hello all,

      I apologize for asking another "what's this steel?" question, but I've exhausted my Google capabilities and thoroughly harassed my coworker.

     The steel in question is DIN 1.2792. The sales guy told me that this is the type of steel requested by the customer. Is this even a valid callout? I have a feeling this is an old designation, does anyone know the new designation? I can find one page that seems to have the material, but I'm not sure. The link is below -

http://www.thyssenfrance.com/fich_tech_en.asp?product_id=11458

     I'll have the sales guy ask the customer again, but if anyone happens to be familiar, it would be much appreciated.

RE: DIN Steel

I believe that there is an error with the designation shown on the Thyssen France page.  55NiCrMoV7 according to ISO 4957 is equivalent to 55 NiCrMoV 6 (1.2713) according to the now obsolete standard DIN 17350.  DIN 17350 also shows a grade 56 NiCrMoV 7 that is identical except for 1.00-1.20Cr and 0.45-0.55Mo instead of 0.60-0.90 and 0.25-0.35 respectively.  The authoritative reference Stahlschluessel shows the following nominal composition for 1.2792, which is not standardized according to any national or international specification:

0.45 C
0.30 Si
0.80 Mn
1.50 Cr
0.80 Mo
4.00 Ni
0.45 V

In any case, if this is for some type of tool (perhaps a filler/spacer in a cold heading die assembly?) then the AISI grade L6 is an appropriate equivalent to 55NiCrMoV7.

@TVP

     Thank you very much for you quick reply! This is for a die changer rail in a press, where there is contact with the wheels of the carriage. I heard about the Stahlschluessel book, it is something I'll have to pick up one day.

@micalbrch

     Thank you for that reference! I guess my google skills aren't as good as I thought.

Thanks again to both of you, it was a really big help!

Best,
Medeski
