Are MTR's a requirement under ASME code for all pipe materials when building to B31.1 code? In other words, are MTR's required for all pipe materials if building to B31.1 code? This is not specifically addressed in the specs or contract requirements. We are being asked by our client to provide MTR's for our pipe and fittings which is not typical. We are a storage tank manufacturer and the nozzles and overflow lines are the materials in question.

Two questions: 1) Why is a tank shop fabbing pipe to B31.1 "Power Piping" [high-pressure steam code]? The requirements of even the non-stamped portions of a pipe system are MUCH more stringent that ASME B31.3. Using B31.3 "Process Piping" Code seems more appropriate.
2) Why would you want to buy pipe from a supplier that is unable/unwilling to provide a CMTR to match the Heat Number stenciled on his pipe?
Even when working to B31.3, I require CMTR's from suppliers. Allows me to assure everybody that the pipe meets the Spec's, and that it has come from a country that does not allow falsification of CMTR's

Just in addition to Duwe6s response (B31-3 would be much more appropriate as noted).
Generally your tank and vessel codes are applicable up to the first flange face or welded joint so your nozzles would fall under the tank code and not a piping code.
