flange design

flange design

(OP)
Hi All,
I need to design a custom made flange, which section of ASME I can use or any other method? Thanks for any help

RE: flange design

ASME VIII Div.1 Appendix 2.

or ASME VIII Div. 2 Section 4.16

Have a look at Pipemill software at www.pipemill.com

This does the above flange design calcs and similar to Eurpoean codes.

RE: flange design

What is the flange going to connect to?

Seems like you have no choice but to make it match whatever you are connecting to: OD, ID, bolt hole dia, bolt circle diameter, material, gasket face dia and type, etc.

Dear C2it,
Thanks a lot for your info. It was a real help to me. After reading that section I noticed that flange geometry ( D.O, D.I, thickness ) should be just determined by experience and then do calculation to find out whether stress amounts are valid or not. But is there a way to start flange geometry with a good guess, rather than know it by experience?

Thanks a lot in advance,
shervin

RE: flange design

Sure.  Start with a bad guess.

We will design everything from now on using only S.I. units ... except for the pipe diameter.

RE: flange design

1. Aim to use a standard gasket size.

2. Take a similar flange and scale up / down dimensions, then   vary and run iterative calcs to find a reasonalbe solution.

3. Always use bolts in multiples of 4, straddling centre-lines

4. Don't forget external loads.

Dear C2it ,
As your last help, your hint was what I was missing. I do believ in your skills winky smile
Big thanks.

Cheers,
Shervin

RE: flange design

Shervin, not sure what you mean.

BighInch ... I like your new slogan. Having dragged ourselves kicking and screaming into the modern era of SI units, pipe diameter has thwarted us again. Now, rather than some inch size OD's matching nb, in SI units, no pipe OD's = nb.
