Code or procedure design repad on existing pressure vessel...

Code or procedure design repad on existing pressure vessel...

(OP)
Hi, this is my first time posting, so be gentle !

I am interning over the summer and attempting to design a repad welded onto the side of an existing pressure vessel.  There is a 225lb load 1'-1" from the vessel we are attempting to cantilever an eyelet with the load on the end.  Any have any suggested directions to go?

Thanks.

RE: Code or procedure design repad on existing pressure vessel...

pressure vessels are usually designed by mechanical group

LHSVBALL, you'd be better off in the Boiler & Pressure Vessel forum. However...

This kind of problem (I assume you are interested in stresses in the shell due to the external load) is usually handled with what is called a WRC-107 (or one of it's successors) analysis. This analysis combines the pressure stresses with the external load stresses and is then compared to some acceptable stress criteria. It is availabe, for a price, from the Weld Research Council.

The calculations can be done by hand, but are fairly complex and better handled with software, if one understands the technical basis. Most commercial PV software includes a WRC-107 module. Any such software available to you?

Regards,

Mike

It would make sense to go over there wouldn't it... I did find this:

http://www.xcalcs.com/cgi-bin/tutti/x2calcs.cgi?d=u_0&l=en

It's a WRC-297, and does relatively what I want it to do.  My bosses just said to give it a try and bring them what I have.  But I do feel that these equations are a tedious and a bit over my head at the time.  Thanks for the info, I'll continue my search for a WRC-107.

LHSVBALL, you would be OK with WRC-297, it is one of the successors to WRC-107.

Now I am not so sure about WRC-297. I AM sure that WRC-107 accounts for rectangular attachements.

After playing around with the 297 for a while I have found no way to make a square plate, which is unfortunate.  Every WRC-107 I have found was for pay only, as I expected.  Thanks for the help though.
