Horizontal pressure vessel saddle reinforcement thickness measurement

Horizontal pressure vessel saddle reinforcement thickness measurement

Horizontal pressure vessel saddle reinforcement thickness measurement

(OP)
Hi,

I want to know if a NDE method exists to be able to measure the available thickness of a saddle reinforcement pad welded on a horizontal pressure vessel and installed on a concrete foundation as shown in the following picture (see red arrow).

The pad in made from SA-516 Gr. 70 plate, 1'' thick X 37'' wide.  A 3/8'' fillet weld exist all around the reinforcement pad.

Thanks in advance!

RE: Horizontal pressure vessel saddle reinforcement thickness measurement

Measure the available thickness for what?

Or are you just trying to measure the actual thickness in several areas on the middle of the pad?

Considered UT?

And I don't know if it's just that the scale of the other objects in the picture is throwing me off, but that pad and weld look a lot thinner than 1" and 3/8".

To see if crevice corrosion has occurred in the middle of the pad.  Cannot use conventional UT because of the concrete foundation below and the pressure wall in the opposite side.

Need to know if another NDE method is available to measure the integrity of the pad by the side of the pad...

Thanks in advance,

That isn't repad, so the saddle thickness is not really critical at all.  This assumes that the concrete is in intimate contact with the saddle.

What should be of concern is the vessel wall thickness.  Take some dimensions on the OD, and go inside and UT the vessel for remaining wall thickness.  This being a pressure vessel, Internal Inspx is mandatory.
