Concrete Beam Detailing

Concrete Beam Detailing

Concrete Beam Detailing

Does anybody know if ACI requires longitudinal beam reinforcement to be in the corners of the beam (i.e. in the corners of the stirrups)? Due to an interference, I'd like to locate a top bar about 4" in from the edge, rather than in the corner. Thanks.

RE: Concrete Beam Detailing

Stirrups are required to be developed around longitudinal bars per ACI 318 12.13.

I'd say 4" in from the corner is almost as close to the edge as you can get anyhow considering stirrup bend and minimum cover.  Worst case, just place a #4 longitudinal on the corner for stirrup development and cut it at the interference(s).

Thanks Teguci, but I should have clarified that I have closed stirrups. ACI 318 12.13 doesn't seem to have anything on closed stirrups, unless I am missing it. Any thoughts on the requirements in the case of closed stirrups?

RE: Concrete Beam Detailing

Answer is still the same.

For ACI 318-08
Torsion - 11.5.4
Seismic - 21.5.3

Good point, thanks.  But what if you don't have any seismic or torsional forces?

RE: Concrete Beam Detailing

You're veeeery lucky then.
