Jersey Barrier
Jersey Barrier
(OP)
Does anyone have a standard detail(s) for jersey barriers as a retaining structure?
I realize they come in modular sections about 20 feet long. How they placed in continuity?
Is it better to dowel/ anchor the adjacent units together?
Or is it better to place them with 1/2 inch expansion joint? If yes, how the differential movement/ settlement will be prevented in this case?
Thanks

The bottom line is that permanent installations need to be anchored to the slab they are sitting on. Temporary installations (relying on friction with the slab only) need to tied together longitudinally. Bolts inserted through eye bolts embedded in the ends of concrete modules have been used and there are various manufactured connections. RE: Jersey Barrier
Some are simple rectangular shapes and some look like giant Lego blocks.
Many are used for counterweights or building retaining walls - like at nurseries selling sand and mulch.
Call around - you can probably found something close to what you need/want.
RE: Jersey Barrier
It was intended to use these Jersey barriers as a retaining wall on the side of a pedestrian walkway instead of a cast-in-place concrete wall. It is not for a highway.
The barriers will be bearing on gravel base and soil. Is the long-term differntial movement or settlement will be an issue and what is the best way to connect the adjacent units. I liked the J-hook but it seems that it comes with the barrier units itself not a hardware to be installed with an existing Jersey barriers, I'll check on that! I appreciate any further feedback

As far as values - no clue. Maybe the mfg can help.

That's what we used, in a stepped manner with planting beds, at our house.
How tall is your retaining wall?
