Unfired pressure vessels under Sec.IV requirements.

Hello

Is it allowable to design pressure vessels without combustion process acc. to ASME Section IV requirements with H-2 form?

In preamble of Section IV we can read that this section is for boilers "directly fired" with fuel. Shall it be interprated that combustion process need to be within the veseel?

By unfired pressure vessels i mean units like economizers which are used to preheat feeding water for a boiler using flue gases from a boiler which are normally wasted.

Currently we are designing some of our economizers under Section VIII with U stamp and some acc. to ASME Section IV with "H part" stamp as a "part of a boiler"

We need to confirm this for one of our clients who is insisting that we can use H-2 form for economizer instead of H-4 form.

Thank you for your help.

Best Regards

Lukasz

RE: Unfired pressure vessels under Sec.IV requirements.

Per HG-520.2 (see below), I would ask if you are the manufacturer of the original boiler.  If you are, then the economizer can be included under the original H-2.  If you are not, H-4 or U-1(A).  Forgive me if this has changed, but my copy of Section IV is 10 years old.

HG-520.2 Partial Data Reports
(a) Manufacturer's Partial Data Reports for those parts of a boiler requiring inspection under this Code, which are furnished by other than the shop of the manufacturer responsible for the completed boiler, shall be executed by the parts manufacturer and shall be forwarded in duplicate to the manufacturer of the finished boiler.
(b) Partial Data Reports (Form H-4) shall be completed for all parts that require inspection under this Code which are fabricated by a manufacturer other than the manufacturer of the completed boiler. These Partial Data Reports, together with his own inspection, shall be the final Authorized Inspector's authority to
witness the application of the Code Symbol to the completed boiler.

Thank you for your reply. What you described is what we are currently doing.

To be honest i do not understand why customer insists to have H-2 form instead of H-4 or even U-1 for secondary heat exchanger (economizer).

I talked with several authorized inspectors and opinions are mixed. Still working on some conclusion. There are several interesting interpretations which adress this (IV-07-04 or IV-83-31).
