Pre-engineered metal building foundations

Pre-engineered metal building foundations

Pre-engineered metal building foundations

(OP)
Hello All,

Hoping someone can help me out. I understand on a typical gabled pre-engineered metal building frame that there are outward thrusting forces at the column bases and that you counteract that by using either hair pins or tie-rods between columns. My question is, do those same outward thrusting forces exist on a single slope framed building?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

RE: Pre-engineered metal building foundations

Yes.  Less so, but still present.  The premise of a pre-engineered metal building (PEMB) frame is that the frame is rigid, but the connections at the foundation are pinned.  This leaves lateral thrust forces that must be resisted.

RE: Pre-engineered metal building foundations

It doesn't have to be a "pre-engineered" building to have lateral forces at the base.  A rigid portal frame typically has both vertical and lateral forces at both supports, otherwise the rafter would be just a simple beam.

I agree with Ron and Mokie here - been doing foundations for these animals for 33 years now... off and on.
