Electric Motors Failures - Landert 18.5kw air cooled & 22kw water cool

Electric Motors Failures - Landert 18.5kw air cooled & 22kw water cool

(OP)
I am having pre-mature failure on the above mentioned electric motors, going down to earth on start up, mechanical bearing failure etc.

Has anyone had similar problems with these motors and what was the solution that one found, we are following the attached assembly procedure, using the recommended bearings etc.

Can anyone please help.

No attachment found.

1. What voltage?
2. Are you using a VFD (inverter) ?
3. Indoor or outdoor?
4. how often are you starting and stopping?
5. distance from VFD or starter to motor?
6. do you have some pics of damage?

Hi Badservo,

1. Voltage is 440v and cycles are 60hz @ 1800rpm
2. No invertor being used, direct on line from contactor.
3. Outdoor, on Rail Grinding Train.
4. 3 times per day
5. 3m to 4m from panel to motor.

Heres some backround on the motors. We generate our own power of 440v 60hz. The amps of the motor is controlled by a PLC which looks at the pressure and controls the amps.We have a chuck attached to the drive end which holds a grinding stone which has a combined weight of about 30kg.

We use these motors 48 of them in a grinding train used to reprofile the railway lines in track. The linear speed is 10km/h, this is the speed that the stone travels over the rail.

We operate in ambient temperatures of between 0 and 40 degrees c

I suggest that you measure the voltage at terminals of one of your motors - prefably at the motor furthest from your generater.
Low votage under load will cook your motor windings especially during starting.

Are the motors failing at random or are the failed motors in similar positions/angles?
The stone taking the first cut at a particular angle may be forced into overload by as-found rail profiles that are outside the assumed limits. This may impact both bearings and windings.
