Steel with soil contact?

Steel with soil contact?

Steel with soil contact?

(OP)
I have to design some masonry support shelf angles to be bolted to a foundation, and will potentially have soil contact on the bottom surface and could get wet from rain on the other surfaces if the mortar or caulking fail.

This is about 5 miles to the ocean.

I initially though 304 or 316 stainless steel, but not sure if galvanizing A36 steel might be an alternative.
Perhaps some sort of applied coating after installation might help.

Any opinions would be helpful.

RE: Steel with soil contact?

I would definately go stainless steel, stainless anchors e.t.c. as this will be out of sigtht out of mind with no warning prior to failure.

To put this into perspective, the Australian brick code requires all brick ties withing something like 10 miles of the sea to be stainless steel so I would think this would be a good indication. I know this is not your code but the ocean is still made of the same stuff!
