ASTM A564 and heat treatment call out

ASTM A564 and heat treatment call out

ASTM A564 and heat treatment call out

(OP)
hello,

On the drawing of a stainless steel nut, we calls out the material 17-4 per ASTM A564.
Is this call out good enough or do we need to call out the heat treatment, for example precipitation?
Thanks.

RE: ASTM A564 and heat treatment call out

ASTM standards typically include a section that describes exactly how to call out material using the standard.

RE: ASTM A564 and heat treatment call out

No, that is not a sufficient call-out.  ASTM A564 is a standard for hot-rolled and cold-finished stainless steel bars, not finished fabricated nuts.  This means that the bar can be ordered in the solution annealed condition, or in any number of different annealed + age hardened conditions, e.g., H900, H925, H1025, etc.).  Stainless steel nuts should be ordered to ASTM F594 Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Nuts.  Grade 630 (17-4 PH) in the AH (age hardened) condition is one of the options, with all of the pertinent details specified including chemical composition, heat treat parameters, mechanical properties, etc.

RE: ASTM A564 and heat treatment call out

Better late than never. Can't answer your question as I don't know enough about your application, however...
A564 is a bar stock spec. but there is no reason items cannot be made from bar stock meeting the requirements of A564.
A564 items (bars, bolts, nuts etc.) can be purchased either annealed (no precipitation treatment which has been used to minimize galling when used with a 300 series stainless nut/bolt), or, for increased strength to any of the age hardening temperatures called out in the A564 Spec.
