Alternatives to PCB

Alternatives to PCB

(OP)
Well i would like to ask if there are any alternatives when it comes to PCB for circuit designs and fabrication.

RE: Alternatives to PCB

Such as?  What's the final purpose?

Dead bug is useful for prototyping.  Component to component with no wire is useful for artistic purposes.  Flex circuits are useful for various things.

Tag strip, if you're a fan of tube-era technology.
Thick-film hybrids, if you have lots of money.
Thin-film hybrids, if you have even more money.

3D point-to-point 'Dead Bug' construction is also sometimes used in some final assemblies where it will be potted (e.g. in epoxy) after passing functional test.

RE: Alternatives to PCB

I was looking for Bob Pease's famous kluge/kludge construction technique when I saw that he died in a car crash yesterday. He was on his way home from Jim William's funeral ceremony. Too sad.

Re: Bob Pease

GE - thanks for mentioning that sad news. It's been a very bad week for these analog gurus.

RE: Alternatives to PCB

My friend Bob Talbert used to make complex 'breads', as in breadboards without the board, by using polyurethane insulated wrapping wire, and dangling components in space.  He used a hot soldering iron to burn off the insulation; in the same step he applied a dab of solder while the joint was cooling.

Incredibly fast construction technique.  Incredibly delicate, too.  You couldn't pick them up off the bench without changing something accidentally.

Oh.  About Pease and Williams.  Now _all_ my heroes are dead.

My feeling, too.
