Dorman long and catnic lintels

Dorman long and catnic lintels

Hi,

Can someone help me. I'm not involved in structural engineering but I'm a little stuck with a university assignment.

What is the difference between a dorman long lintel and a catnic lintel? I believe the bottom horizontal plate is missing on the dorman long lintel. If this is the correct difference, what effects does this have in regards to both lintels?

I would be very grateful for any help.

Jim

Google is your friend.

"All of this changed in the early 60s with the advent of the 'combination lintel'. Its early name was a 'Dorman Long' lintel, a name long lost in the mists of steel privatisation. Now they are sometimes referred to as a 'Catnic' lintel."

RE: Dorman long and catnic lintels

It seems that Catnic and Dorman Long merged in 2001, so I would guess there is no difference any more.

Thanks guys. I understand that the two merged. The point of my assignment and research is to evaluate the difference between the two when the first patents were released. I believe that the dorman long patent was release in 1960 something and the catnic patent was released at a later date. The two lintels weren't identical at this stage in the design development. Looking at the old dorman long patent there seems to be the bottom horizontal plate missing, is this true and if so what effect would this plate missing give you?
Like I said I don't have a background in this engineering field so any exta help will be great.

RE: Dorman long and catnic lintels

Sorry, Big Jim I can't help.  Prior to this thread, I had never heard of Catnic or Dorman Long.  So far as I know, it is not part of the structural vernacular.  Perhaps others can join in who know a bit more about the two lintel brands.

Dorman Long was a big time fabricator and erector in the UK. they did the Sidey Harbour Bridge amongst other things.
