Surge Analysis in LNG Loading Lines

Surge Analysis in LNG Loading Lines

Surge Analysis in LNG Loading Lines

(OP)
Hi All,

A number of papers I have read have advised against use of liquid pipeline analysis software for LNG lines . This is because they are operating near to the fluid vapor pressure. When PERC or ESD systems operate cavitation can occur and the software methods do not accurately predict the system response if two phase flow regimes are in play. I have come across some papers on the subject and wish to learn more. Any peer reviewed references would be welcome.

I do not intend to accept the brief offered to me as I have doubts as to the results I could achieve with confidence. Who are the leaders in this field? What software would they use? Is it proprietary?

RE: Surge Analysis in LNG Loading Lines

Yes, it would be appropriate to use a hydraulic software simulator that incoprorates phase change with full energy balance (i.e. a multiphase hydraulic simulator).

The reason is, as you suspected, the liquid LNG could flash somwhere in the line where the cummulative friction (and elevation head)loss reduces the line pressure below the vapor pressure of the LNG. You will then have 2-phase flow in the line, or at least in a portion of the line. Once this happens the hydraulic reqime of the pipeline can drasticlly change, decreasing the flow rate capacity of the system at the same pipeline inlet pressure.

Single phase liquid hydraulic simulators cannot detect this problem and could give very erroneous (overestimated) flow rate capacity of the system.

This analyses should be performed by or at leasty be checked/verified by an experienced pipeline flow assurance engineer / process engineer.
