Equivalent Gaskets - ASME B16.20 / BS3381

Equivalent Gaskets - ASME B16.20 / BS3381

Equivalent Gaskets - ASME B16.20 / BS3381

(OP)
I am working on a Project where it has been stipulated that all spiral wound gaskets are to be manufactured in accordance with B16.20 accept for 25/1500# and 50/1500# which must be BS3381.

I am trying to figure out what the differences between the gaskets are as I have seen gaskets manufactured as B16.20 crossed out and re-stamped as BS3381.

Comparing the standards the only difference I see is in the sealing element I.D. A #1500 B16.20 gasket has the same sealing ring id as a #2500 BS3381 gasket.

Does this mean the two are interchangeable? The B16.20 is equivalent to a #2500 BS3381 gasket due to its larger sealing element area?

Appreciate any help.

The two gaskets are essential identical, hence they are interchangeable. Refer also to Klinger catalogue for B16.20 / BS 3381 SW gaskets.

Comparing ASME B16.20 and BS 3381 I see they are not.
How did you come to that conclusion?

                   2" (DN50/900&1500#)      8" (DN200/1500#)
                       B16.20   BS 3381       B16.20     BS 3381
Outer locating ring    143     142.9        352.6    352.4
outer gasket seal       85.9     86.1       257.3    263.9
inner gasket seal       58.7     66.3        215.9    225
inner ring                  52.3     52.4        196.9    203.2

The outer locating ring dimensions are the same, but the gasket sealing areas are different.

The sealing area is not for you to evaluate the diference, since that's the part engineered by manufacturers to comply with the process requirements and are guaranteed equally on both standards. As far as the outer ring concerns, that's the bit you should be concerned with, to make sure it fits within the standard flange configuration. That's why they are 'essentially' identical.
