CAD Box Screens: Is an IPS Screen Important?

CAD Box Screens: Is an IPS Screen Important?

CAD Box Screens: Is an IPS Screen Important?

(OP)
I'm selecting a new monitor and trying get the biggest and best that the company is willing to pay for.

A Dell 24" Ultrasharp is a bit too expensive at $509 so I'm looking round for alternatives and have a choice of a Dell 23" Ultrasharp Widescreen which is an IPS screen, or a Dell 24" Professional Widescreen which is not an IPS.

I'm told IPS (In-Plane Switching) means that the screen will display the true colours over a wider range of angles and becomes more important as screen size increases as the viewing angle changes betwwen the middle and the edge of the screen.  I can see this being important for Class A surfacing working etc but I only do Powertrain design with ProE, Catia & UG/NX.

My current monitor is a Dell but not an IPS unit and has performs prefectly well.

I welcome any comments on the relevance of IPS to our type of work.  If it gives a much better picture then I'll go for a slightly smaller IPS screen, otherwise I think the money would be better spent on a bigger viewing area.

Thanks

RE: CAD Box Screens: Is an IPS Screen Important?

I would go with size over color rendition any day for mechanical CAD.  One thing to watch for, many of the current screens are 16:9 aspect ratio which is great for TV but not so good for CAD.  I'm make sure any screen I buy is 16:10 (run at 1920 x 1200 resolution).  Preferably dual 24"!
