Anderson Greenwood Series 200 PSV in liquid service

Anderson Greenwood Series 200 PSV in liquid service

(OP)

I am evaulating whether or not it is acceptable to place and AndersonGreenwood Series 200 into a liquid service.

The service is as a relief valve on a jacket water cooling system for a gas compressor. The liquid is a water/glycol mix. The sizing basis is tube rupture. The set pressure is 60 psig and the operating pressure is about 20 psig.

The relief valve currently installed is a Series 400, M/N 45310G/S1. The series 200 M/N is 25310G/S1. The valve itself will not be changed, the popshop will just remove the series 400 pilot and replace it with a series 200 pilot.

The reason that I am considering this pilot replacement is because the installed 400 series PSV has allowed gas to backflow from the flare header into the cooling water system on several occasions. Yes, the 400 series has a backflow preventer installed, but it does not work. The popshop guys up here have seen this problem before and say that the 200 series pilot should fix it.

The reason that I am concerned about installing the 200 series is that the vendor literature states that the 200 Series is for gas/mixed phase service. The 200 series is a pop valve, so chattering could be a problem. I looked through VIII and UG-125 (f) indicates pressure relief devices must be designed for liquid services, but the pop shop techs say they have installed the 200 series PSVs for other companies on this field.

Does anyone have any experience with Series 200 PSVs in liquid service?
