large gate valve repair?

large gate valve repair?

large gate valve repair?

(OP)
Are there any good manuals or videos that cover repairs to gate valves?  I have a 12" gate valve where the threaded rod that the brass 2" nut slides onto and then the smaller nut holds it on has broken off. It is functional right now if gentle but I don't want to damage it any more. Anyones help would be appreciated.

RE: large gate valve repair?

What are your resources?

What is your timeframe?  When do you need to start?  How long can you stand being shutdown for?   How much variation can you tolerate in resuming operations?  That is - if you fail in the repairs yourself using a temporary fix or local talent and local labor or your own millwrights/operators to fix it, how long can you tolerate delays before getting (more expensive!) contract labor in place?

Do you have all replacement parts on hand?  Seals, nuts, bolts, studs, washers, new brass fitting, gaskets, etc?   Do you have the original drawings on hand?  Can you get them?  Do you have a replacement valve ready or available?  How long will it take to get the replacement valve to your site?

Where are you, and what resources (machine shop or millwright tools) do you have on hand?  Crane available?  Compressed air?  welding gas and welders available?   What electric power, lights, rain covers, and laydown area do you have?

"Have a plan, and execute that plan.  Have a backup plan ready for when the plan fails, and be ready to execute that backup plan.  Make an alternative plan, and be thinking of a replacement backup plan when the alternative plan to the backup plan fails."

Is that a square thread? Calling the manufacturer as stated above is good.  If manufacturer is out of business, contact a local machine shop to make one up.

Unless there is an emergency I won't need to use this valve until this time next year. Looking at the plans and photos I cannot tell the brand or model. I'm thinking a Kennedy. I found an exploded diagram of a Kennedy model and the threaded top is part of a longer shaft down into the gate. I don't know if it is possible to replace that shaft with the flow on or braze a new brass rod onto the top but if not a new valve will have to be installed since there is no working valve on that run of main.

What is inside the pipe? If water, call the nearest municipality with their own water system. They probably have the parts or know where to get them in a hurry. And follow all the advice above.
