Strength of mesh wire material

Strength of mesh wire material

Strength of mesh wire material

(OP)
Hi all,

I am thinking, how do you work out the strength of a mesh wire material.

say for example, i have a hole with a diameter of X. a metal wire mesh cloth(with a wire diameter of D) if fixed over the hole, and a fluid is passing thro the mesh and hole, to act as a filter,

there will be a delta P across the mesh, and this delta p increase over time due to the particle caught on the mesh.

now the question is when the delta P is known, how do i work out if the mesh is strong enough?

do i simplify the problem, by view it as a flat bar with a width of D, fixed support at 2 point a distance of X, with uniform distributed load of P applied on top it?

Thanks in advance.

RE: Strength of mesh wire material

Given that mesh often deforms to help support the load, I think you'll probably approximate it to a membrane and use a membrane solution (ie assume it has no bending strength, just in plane tension).

This is conservative.

Thanks Greg,

i was thinking that mesh would bend as well, but only under enough pressure. Maybe i should treat it as a beam to sea the stress exceed the elastic limit, and if it dose then treat it as a membrane.   but again when you treat it as a membrane, how do you convert the pressure applied normal to the surface in inplace tension?

Cheers

Grins, well I didn't say /I/ could solve the membrane equation, but I bet it is Roarke or dead easy for the simplest case.

FEA would be the easiest way of handling the case of a grid.

RE: Strength of mesh wire material

You might look at it as a bunch of cantenary cables??

Well, What I have here is, to use a metal wire mesh over on top of a perforated plate to form the filter screen. and try to work out what is the max pressure can it handle before the mesh got so bend and pushed through the holes on perforated plate, or the wire broke.
