api self priming centrifugal pump

api self priming centrifugal pump

does api support self priming centrifugal pumps or not.
We sent an inquiry to some pump manufacturer asked them to supply a self priming centrifugal pump as per API code.
some manufacturers deny and someone quote a simple pump with priming vessel. can we say that a priming vessel added to an ordinary type of pump is same as self priming pump or there are some differences.
The pump is for waste water delivery from a sump in a chemical plant.

RE: api self priming centrifugal pump

API 610 do not have a self primming pump specs.
ordinary pump with priming vessel requires a foot valve.
A true self priming pump does not need a foot valve.

What do you need a API 610 pump for waste water? It is not high pressure , not high temp.

RE: api self priming centrifugal pump

OH 2 type is stated and is not self priming. It is end-suction over hung impeller with center lined mounted.
EEXD IIC T4 is hazard area specification for the motor.

please don't consider oh2, the owner needs API 610 self priming pump.
is that possible?

RE: api self priming centrifugal pump

No need at all for an API pump here. API 610 covers critical service pumps in the refining industry.

All you need to worry about with the Haz Location is the motor; it must comply.

RE: api self priming centrifugal pump

What part of " API 610 do not have a self priming pump specs" don't you understand?

RE: api self priming centrifugal pump

Artisi, even though i agree with your statement as such: it has already been clearly stated that API 610 dont have a self priming spec, we normally try to moderate ourself and use a more polite tone, avoid flames and such! This is a forum for professionals.

Best regards

Ok, probably a bit harsh -  but it was stated there was no self-priming API but ignored.

Dear Friends,
Please let me to correct my question.
Is that possible to have an API 610 pump with self priming system for waste water?
If yes do you know some supplier?
Thank you

RE: api self priming centrifugal pump

Yes, that would be possible  - use an API wetend with appropriate  motor and make it into self-priming unit - but bear in mind the overall unit won't be approved as API.

You also need to decide whether you want vacumn self-primed, using a vacumn pump or air driven ejector or wet self-primed.

Can't help with a supplier - although it is not a difficult conversion.

RE: api self priming centrifugal pump

You could try
http://www.godwinpumps.com/en/index.php/godwin-products/cd-range/ - whether they are interested in manufacturing something "off-standard" is the question.

RE: api self priming centrifugal pump

May be you should just show the owner the cost of a standard API spec pump without self priming system yet and the cost of a ANSI standard self priming pump. I am sure he will change his mind.

However my best experience was a customer insisting on a API pump for pumping flushing water to the toilet even though the pump is located in safe area. His reason being that this is a refinery and all the pumps are API specs..

RE: api self priming centrifugal pump

Self prime pump does not follow API 610. It follows some otehr standard which I beleive construction. Similar to fire pumps follow other rather than API.

One of the major things is for example nozzel load, it is much lower than what is usually specified in API 610. This is an example and there are many other deviations.

We still use self prime pump in refineires and petrochemcial plants even thoguh they are not follow api610.

RE: api self priming centrifugal pump

It is always possible to engineer a self priming pump to be API 610 compliant.

However I don't know of any company (my own included), that make them as standard.

So you are looking at a special pump which equates to high cost (assuming you can convince a company to make it for you).

RE: api self priming centrifugal pump

Gordonmech,
There is no designation in API 610 to cover self-primers. Again, the PUMP does not need to comply with API 610 due to anything in the attached spec; it is only the motor and it's enclosure that would have to comply with your spec.

There are hundreds of non-API pumps in every refinery; even in hazardous locations. Although in the past few years it has become fairly bloated with some questionable requirements, the true intent of API 610 is really to make certain that pump can handle and contain it's PUMPED FLUID safely at Conditions of Service (therefore no cast iron, nozzle stiffness requirements, mech seals in lieu of packing, etc.). This is not a concern for water.

The pump manufacturers noted above are very reputable and have many, many installations in refining/petrochem facilities. Godwin makes a great one, but usually for rental (they were just bought by ITT/Goulds group). Also Gorman-Rupp makes a very fine self-primer. Just find the rep for those manufacturers in the town you're looking at, and they will be able to give you Installed List in refineries/chem plants that will satisfy your customer.

I can't recall your specs, but you might also look at a diaphragm pump that can be operated by air and doesn't need a motor. Plenty of good reps will be able to build an entire package for you if needed.
