NX CAM performance 32 bit vs 64 bit

NX CAM performance 32 bit vs 64 bit

NX CAM performance 32 bit vs 64 bit

(OP)
Is there any advantage to getting a 64 bit workstation and installing 64 bit NX to use NX CAM  (NX 6 or NX 7.5).  Does 64 bit perform any CAM releated tasks faster?

RE: NX CAM performance 32 bit vs 64 bit

Performance between 32-bit and 64-bit machines is generally comparable. The 64-bit machine may be a little slower as it is processing more data in each cycle.
You get advantages with 64-bit with large assemblies that use lots of memory or generate large files in memory. NC files fall into this last category.
You also get advantages with multi-core systems, enabling other applications to use a dedicated core instead of sharing a core with NX.
Anyone who buys 64-bit systems based on performance only, call me. I have some ocean front property in Arizona to sell you.

RE: NX CAM performance 32 bit vs 64 bit

We didn't notice any performance increase directly. But there are no regrets.
Going from 32 to 64 requires a clean install; you can't upgrade.
As a result, we went from a tired, buggy version of Vista, to a snappy, clean version of Win7. Again, any "performance boost" was primarily due to the clean install (that, and I found Vista was never decent OS to begin with).
Another added bonus was that our computers were finally using all 4Gb ram, and many were given another 4Gb for about $40. That sped things up quite a bit, depending how many programs you have running (I have a bunch open all the time), and that in turn removes some wear and tear on the HD as it no longer needs to run as much.

If you really want NX to run smoothly, invest in a pro graphics card such as an Nvidia Quadro 4000.

If you generate large tool paths, or use the IPW a lot, then I would highly recommend 64 bit with at least 4GB.
