thread248-237030: R&D tracking software
I saw the previous thread on this during a recent web search, and I was wondering if anything had been brought out in the past couple of years that might be suitable for this type of application.
Basically we have an R&D environment where there are lots of boards floating around with various different HW & SW revisions on there. There are faults with certain boards that are arising from testing done on them etc, these boards are quite large and complex and the number of changes made to them can be very large so it's not pratical to have a traveller tag on each board with all the mods listed. An excel spreadsheet would quickly become unwieldy also due to the large number of info.
Ideally we would like some type of database software that would allow an engineer or tech to type in the serial number of the board and bring up all the relevant info & history for that particular unit.
A web based database would probably be preferrable again so that it's be easily accessible from any PC in the facility.
Anyone any experience of a suitable package that's out there?
Thanks
P

Ideally you would have a member of staff that could create a custom database with a web interface. We are blessed with such skilled staff members and they could create something like this very easily and probably within several weeks (a month max) - leveraging off existing systems. Implement bar codes (tags, and scanners at the stations) and it would be a very powerful system.
Although it's instinctive to believe that off-the-shelf software must be cheaper, it's not always true. Sometimes they price it so high that it's insane. Plus the flexibility of having changes made in a day is pretty neat.

> No installation software or remote clients needed
> No local configuration changes that might interfere with the application
> Accessible from any computer with intranet connection
Our timecard charging system is intranet-based. Runs slow, but is otherwise reasonable.
