how can you tell if a solution of brine is saturated? anyone knows?

RE: saturated brine

Solid precipitates out when cooled.

Homework?

Good luck,

RE: saturated brine

A saturated brine solution contains 26.4% salt by weight at 60°F. A salometer can tell you the weight percentage of salt in your solution.

RE: saturated brine

ione,
Is it really the same percent for any salt?  Water can hold exactly the same mass of NaCl, MgCl, or CaCl?  That is amazing.

RE: saturated brine

David,

The value I've posted is for NaCl (not universally valid)

RE: saturated brine

Also, if you add a pinch more salt to a saturated solution, the solid will not dissolve.

Good luck,

Thank you for your replies! The problem is that I have a vessel which I cannot see inside where I have to prepare a saturated solution of brine. The temperature is the ambiental temperature (~20 degrees Celsius). The saturated solution must have 30% concentration of NaCl. Is there any way that I can know when the solution is saturated without actual seeing a solution?

RE: saturated brine

If you know the volume of the vessel it doesn't seem that hard to me to calculate the amount of NaCl to be added. You could also prepare the brine outside the vessel and then fill it.

Is 30% concentration as weight percentage?

RE: saturated brine

If you need confirmation, there are many ways to use readily available instruments to get density.

Good luck,
Latexman

Yes it is about weight percentage. The only way is to prepare the brine in the tank. Theoretically is easy. Lets say that we have 1 liter solution then you have to add 300 g of NaCl to have 30% solution. But after what time can I tell the solution is saturated?
Regarding the instrumentation I think a salmeter shall be ok, am I right?
Thank you
