Duct and area smoke detectors without FA system in a restaurant?

Duct and area smoke detectors without FA system in a restaurant?

Duct and area smoke detectors without FA system in a restaurant?

(OP)
Hello all,

I am doing a Project in NY for an Italian Pizza Restaurant, there is no Fire Alarm System in the building, but the place has a sprinkler system. According to the NY city code requirements I need to have duct smoke detectors and if there is a trouble they shall activate a visible or audible signal in an approved location. Is this common use without having a FA system? also is it required to have regular smoke detectors in the restaurant?

Thank you for your time.

RE: Duct and area smoke detectors without FA system in a restaurant?

NFPA 90A (2007)
"     6.4.2.1 Smoke detectors listed for use in air distribution systems
shall be located as follows:
(1) Downstream of the air filters and ahead of any branch
connections in air supply systems having a capacity
greater than 944 L/sec (2000 ft3/min)
6.4.3* Function.
6.4.3.1 Smoke detectors provided as required by 6.4.2 shall
automatically stop their respective fan(s) on detecting the
presence of smoke.   "

Keep in mind that Intl Mechanical Code requires the detectors, only it says upstream of the units..  So guess what?  You have to put the duct smoke detectors both upstream and downstream to satisfy both codes..

As for alarming:
"    6.4.4.3 Where smoke detectors required by Section 6.4 are
installed in a building not equipped with an approved fire
alarm system as specified by 6.4.4.2, the following shall occur:
(1) Smoke detector activation required by Section 6.4 shall
cause a visual signal and an audible signal in a normally
occupied area.
(2) Smoke detector trouble conditions shall be indicated visually
or audibly in a normally occupied area and shall be
identified as air duct detector trouble.    "

What all that language does this mean?   First, you have to hard wire it shutoff the HVAC unit it is detecting for..  Also you have to specify/buy the optional accessories from the duct detector manufacturer.. Remote mounted audible and visual alarm/trouble indicators (red LED, yellow LED, horn).  Put a label next to them saying what they are.

Easy peasy.  BTW thanks for mentioning Pizza before I've had dinner!

You need to find out what mechanical code the ahj uses

More then likely it is some version of the international mechanical code

It will tell you when duct detectors are required Normaly over 2000 CFM

and yes if no fire alarm is installed need remote indicator of some type

The sprinkler system is not monitored????  If so just tie it into to the monitoring panel
