Smoke Detector Requirements with no Fire Alarm System?

Smoke Detector Requirements with no Fire Alarm System?

Smoke Detector Requirements with no Fire Alarm System?

(OP)
Hello all,

I am doing a Project in NY for an Italian Pizza Restaurant, there is no Fire Alarm System in the building, but the place has sprinkler system. According to the NY city code requirements I need to have duct smoke detectors and they shall activate a visible or audible signal in an approved location if there is a trouble. Is this common use without having a FA system? also do I need regular smoke detectors in the restaurant?

Thank you for your time

RE: Smoke Detector Requirements with no Fire Alarm System?

There are likely duct smoke detectors that are totally stand alone.  Just do some googling.

Call the fire inspector and ask if he requires regular smoke detectors.  I doubt you will.  The duct ones are to detect an invisible fire.  Presumably a room full of patrons will notice smoke the room.

RE: Smoke Detector Requirements with no Fire Alarm System?

This question would be more appropriate in NFPA (fire) Code Issues forum.

Nonetheless, the answer would be in NFPA 90A. Generally if there is an existing FA system, it needs to be connected to it. If there is no building FACP, the alarm contact of the stand alone detector is required to be wired to a audio/visual devices notification in the occupied areas.

Exact local requirements may vary by the jurisdiction.

RE: Smoke Detector Requirements with no Fire Alarm System?

These would be stand alone detectors used to alarm, sometimes they would trigger a fire damper to cut off outside air or smoke spread. The problem would come if this "approved location" is remote from the device locations.  Then you could get into a requirement that the interconnecting wiring be supervised, etc..., which then really  becomes a fire detection "system".  I would check with your AHJ to make sure he will accept a simple detector, (120V?), with local annunciation.  Anything more and you approach that slippery slope of Fire Alarm System Requirements.  I am not familiar with codes in the big apple, but I would think this would not be a new requirement.

Good luck,
EEJaime
