747-8 aborted take-off test

747-8 aborted take-off test

RE: 747-8 aborted take-off test

Saw it - amazing.  Stopping something that heavy in just a few thousand feet!!

RE: 747-8 aborted take-off test

Very cool test.  Brakes glowing red hot.  I wasn't sure if I saw a few licks of flame or if that was just the glow from the discs.

RE: 747-8 aborted take-off test

I wonder if this test included the extra 30 tons or so of passenger and luggage weight?

RE: 747-8 aborted take-off test

I notice the tires are flat after the test.  Someone told me that the pilot can deflate the tires.  Is that just done to lower the plane in a controlled manner to the tarmac rather than letting the brake heat cause a blowout and subsequent rapid drop?

RE: 747-8 aborted take-off test

Those tires and/or wheels generally incorporate a thermal fuse that blows out or melts when things get a bit too warm....
