ASME IX Section QW-420

ASME IX Section QW-420

ASME IX Section QW-420

(OP)
For a WPS that has been qualified using a base material classified in ASME IX, QW-422 as P1G2, we only use the WPS for the qualified/tested material.

I have  case where a WPS (with impacts) was qualified using ASTM A350 LF2 and our customer would like us to utilize the same WPS for welding API 5L X65 material- also a P1G2 material per ASME IX. ASME IX states that the base metals can't be indiscriminately substituted for each other.

What kind of testing is recommended to determine if this substitution is acceptable? I have compared chemistry, mechanical properties, design requirements and performed simulated PWHT cycles.

RE: ASME IX Section QW-420

If you are welding on a ASME section VIII, Div 1 code vessel, the material for procedure qualification shall be in the same heat treated condition when impact test is required, such as normalized, Q&T, etc. See UG-84(h)(2).

And the same P# and Group#.

It is not the Code's intent to force a new PQR for each and every material.  That is why there are P#'s and Group #'s.  Everything in the same group welds essentially the same, asumeing same HT.  No requal required.
