Settlement of backfill material

Settlement of backfill material

Settlement of backfill material

(OP)
Lift station installed on berm of pound. Berm is 10 mt height form adjoining ground. We installed steel discharge pipe up to 6 mt form lift station wall. And it has two robar coupling, one at the wall and other at transition form steel to DR18 pipe.

Engineer concern about chances of settlement of ground will damage piping system.  Because depth of back fill is 10 mt and material is clay. I try Googled to find out relation between time and settlement of backfilled material over the time in the give loading conditions. But no luck.
Thanks in advance for information sharing and suggestion.

RE: Settlement of backfill material

What do you mean by "berm of pound"?

What size of force main?

What is the composition of the backfill, is it all excavated material?

Thanks Bimr,
I am refering Berm = Bank of the pond. size of force main is 300mm. and backfil meterial is Brown clay soil.

Thanks,

RE: Settlement of backfill material

Is the discharged pipe approximately 5-ft below finished grade?

The typical practice is to compact the backfill as it is placed. If the compaction was skipped, there may be settlement problems with 10 meters of fill.

pipe is 10 ft below the top of bank. pipe is following slope of bank to make 10 ft cover on it.
it will be compacted well after we pipe installtion but not sure about how much good during the bank construction.

Is there any how pipe can be protected in event of settlement. I think pipe support would make situation worst.

Thanks for your reply,

RE: Settlement of backfill material

If you have a pipe at 10 meters below and there is saturated clay due to being near a pond your pipe better be encased or at least embedded properly with sand or a slurry mix. 2nd I'm pretty sure c900 dr 18 can not be that far under ground due to the pressures unless encased. Your back filling with clay!!!!? and its not compacted? that sounds like a lot of problems to me. In order to figure out the settlement you will have to determine the load of the footing for lift station and complete a soils test in order to determine the properties of the clay.

RE: Settlement of backfill material

pile support the pipe and design for downdrag.

RE: Settlement of backfill material

consider settlement of fill and fill induced settlement. consult a good geotech to perform an exploratory program (drilling, sampling, lab/in-situ testing) and settlement analysis. the settlement and time rate of settlement can be calculated. good luck.
