Manganese Steel Casting

Manganese Steel Casting

Manganese Steel Casting

(OP)
Hello,

I'm trying to cast Manganese Steel (~ 1,2%C,  12%Mn) and I was told that using Furanic Resin bonded silica sand moulds causes gas emissions during solidification. (due to some kind of reaction manganese steel has with these resins.)

Is this actually happening?  Does anybody know?

(I only knew about Hydrogen emissions in open hearth furnaces.)

RE: Manganese Steel Casting

Manganese steel is basic in nature and you need to provide a magnesite mold wash to prevent any metal mold reaction. What is the furnace lining?

RE: Manganese Steel Casting

You can use a limited amount of other sand binder systems if you are using core wash to isolate them from the molten metal.

It is an induction furnace and has the following lining:
MgO < 10%
Al203 > 85%
Residue~ 1%

Also I am using a caustic calcined magnesia based coating in the mould.

RE: Manganese Steel Casting

High alumina lining is neutral in nature. advice you to change to basic lining, while melting. Lesser  lining erosion and slag issues.
You can use some proprietary ready mix for mold and core wash. Also try to follow ed's suggestion.

What is the casting you are manufacturing and how do you check for defects?

It is a crushing knife for the phosphoric fertilizer industry and I will check it with an ultrasonic transducer.

Will try to find appropriate mix.
Thanks for the advice.
