ASTM B164 vs. B366 Material Markings for Pipe Fittings

ASTM B164 vs. B366 Material Markings for Pipe Fittings

ASTM B164 vs. B366 Material Markings for Pipe Fittings

(OP)
When marking Monel 1" IPS Schedule 80 (Class 3000#) Socket Weld Fittings, one manufacture uses ASTM B164 while the other uses B366.

The fittings are made from B164 material, but one they are machined and made into fittings, then should B366 be used vice B164.

Which one would be proper for marking requirements IAW ASME B16.11?

RE: ASTM B164 vs. B366 Material Markings for Pipe Fittings

If you review ASTM A 366, Table 2 lists permissible raw materials, of which ASTM B 164 is listed for bar forging and forging stock.

Please read below and get a copy of ASTM B366

13. Product Marking
13.1 The manufacturer's name or trademark, material,
grade, if applicable, the size and schedule number, the
designation as shown in Table 2, under "Marking," either
column 1 for Grade CR fittings or column 2 for Grade WP
fittings, shall be stamped, stenciled, or otherwise permanently
marked on each fitting. Grade WP fitting marking
also must include the suffix in accordance with 5.2. On
wall thicknesses thinner than 0.083 in., no steel stamps or
other indented markings shall be used. When the size does
not permit complete marking, identification marks may be
omitted in the sequence shown in MSS SP-25. See Table 4
for marking example of grades and classes.

RE: ASTM B164 vs. B366 Material Markings for Pipe Fittings

Regarding which ASTM reference to use....

If you are using the 2009 edition of B16.11 below applies

5.1 Standard Materials
Fittings shall be made of materials consisting of forgings,
bar, seamless pipe, or seamless tubular products.
These materials shall conform to the requirements for
theWP seamless construction materials of ASTM Fitting
Specifications A 234, A 403, A 420, A 815, or B 366 or
ASTM Forging Specifications A 105, A 182, A 350, B 462,
or B 564. Tees, elbows, and crosses shall not be made
from bar stock.

If you are using the previous edition of B16.11, the marking of B 164 is acceptable.
