NON-LINEAR BEHAVIOUR
NON-LINEAR BEHAVIOUR
(OP)
Dear collages,
I want to model a steel base plate connection, and I want to calculate the distribution of surfaces in tension and compression. I would have to define a non-linear spring (k=Wlinker modul in compresion, 0 in tension). Is it possible to develop in SAP2000, or I have to use SAFE?
Thank you very much for your attention.
Best regards,
JJ

RE: NON-LINEAR BEHAVIOUR
An alternative would be to use any spring, run, remove those in tension, run over and over, until there are a negligible few left in tension. I promise you if this one doesnt converge fast, then a complex model will not converge faster either.
Curious, why would you do that? Spring stiffness is difficult to judge accurately anyway(though it may not matter much in some cases for stresses-it will always matter for displacements).
What is usually done, is you assume a rigid base and use simple beam bending formulas unless your base is complex for that simple approximation. Bases are best kept rigid anyway.

RE: NON-LINEAR BEHAVIOUR
Thank you for your answer. I have been searching how to do, and it is possible by defining a non-linear spring and performing a non-linear analysis.
I'm performing this study because I want to study the stiffness of the connection.
