Fittings and Markings-Steel and Monel

Fittings and Markings-Steel and Monel

Fittings and Markings-Steel and Monel

(OP)
ASME B16.11 covers forged socket weld fittings for steel but what if the fittings are machined from round stock.  Is there a separate standard for machined fittings and what is it? And would that standard cover only steel or can it beapplied to machined nickel fittings also.

Another question: some fittings I have a marked a105 for steel in reference to astm a105, but on the monel fittings are marked a400 for monel. Astm a400 does not seem to have any verbiage about nickels. I know the 400 can reference uns numbers and is meant for monel but why do the steel fittings refer to an ASTM number and the monel fittings refer to an UNS system?

RE: Fittings and Markings-Steel and Monel

For ASTM , try B366, B164, B127, B165, B509,510,513 , B564 . I do not have current ed.

RE: Fittings and Markings-Steel and Monel

ASME B16.11 references back to ASME B16.34 for material used to fabricate fittings. Get a copy of B16.34, review it and determine which ASTM standards can be used for Monel material;

For bars supplied, it is only ASTM B164.

Get a copy of B 164 and review it.

ASTM does have specific reference to nickel-base materials, you just need to know where to find them. Hint - ASTM B is for nonfarrous materials, ASTM A is for ferrous materials.

RE: Fittings and Markings-Steel and Monel

(OP)
ASME B16.11 is for for fittings, ASTM B164 is for bar, B366 is for nickel alloy fittings.  B16.11 refers to both astm A105 and astm B366. however my steel fitting have a105 stamped on them which is for fittings so wouldn't my monel fittings have B366 stamped on them vice B164. (and what about astm B564) My monel fittings are stamped B164.

When begining with ASME B16.11, section 5.1 list A105 and B366 but does not list B164

I am just asking why use a bar stock standard for monel but not use the bar stock standard for my steel fittings. It seems it is comparing apples to oranges but both fittings are the same rating and size, but different material.

RE: Fittings and Markings-Steel and Monel

It looks to me like the 2009 edition of B16.11 was revised to limit material to the following

5.1 Standard Materials
Fittings shall be made of materials consisting of forgings,
bar, seamless pipe, or seamless tubular products.
These materials shall conform to the requirements for
the WP seamless construction materials of ASTM Fitting
Specifications A 234, A 403, A 420, A 815, or B 366 or
ASTM Forging Specifications A 105, A 182, A 350, B 462,
or B 564. Tees, elbows, and crosses shall not be made
from bar stock.

The 2001 Edition of B16.11 for materials simply referenced material in Table 1 of B16.34.

RE: Fittings and Markings-Steel and Monel

The a400 markings on the Monel fittings may refer to the fact that they are Monel Alloy 400. Check with your supplier to see if they can help you out - they may be the ones responsible for the stamping.

RE: Fittings and Markings-Steel and Monel

Probably for the same reason that forged fitting per A182 are marked, F91, F22, F11, etc. because the Specification has multiple grades. Same applies to WP9, WP91. etc under A-234.

RE: Fittings and Markings-Steel and Monel

Bruv is correct, a400 means nickel alloy 400.  Monel is a trademark of Special Metals Corporation, not a generic material or alloy description like steel, brass, etc.
