Steel specification conversion/cross referance

Steel specification conversion/cross referance

Steel specification conversion/cross referance

(OP)
Hello to all.
I am in the freight and transit railroad industry as a Welding Mfg. Engineer/CWI.  I am currently qualifying welding procedures and am having to deal with several AISI steels.  Is there a way that the AISI numbers can be cross referenced to an ASTM standard?  I am trying to group my material to cut down on the number of qualifications and total costing.

Thanks for the input!

RE: Steel specification conversion/cross referance

Check out www.matweb.com for equivalent numbers to different specs.

@ looslib

Thanks, I have looked at this website many times and it has proven to be helpful.  There are several materials that I need a cross reference on and they are not listed on Matweb.

Thank you for the reply

I would suggest you purchase the following document for your use;

AWS B2.1 Specification for Welding Procedure and Performance
Qualification

There is a Table D that provides base metal grouping for welding. Each metal is listed by Grade, Type, etc with corresponding ASTM specification number followed by an AWS M-No grouping number for welding.

I have the latest edition of B2.1.  That is what I am qualifying to, but the materials in question are "unlisted"  My qualifications will be for 22 separate base metal combinations.  These combinations are made up of pre-qualified, listed, and unlisted materials.  The AISI steels in question are all carbon steel, but do not show up in Table D of B2.1  For instance, AISI 1541 and AISI 1040.  These are just two of the AISI steels I am dealing with.  With that being said, should I assume that all AISI steels would conform to ASTM A830 / A830M - 02 Standard Specification for Plates, Carbon Steel, Structural Quality, Furnished to Chemical Composition Requirements?

For purposes of weld qualification, yes.
