a dressing machine made befor 35 years

a dressing machine made befor 35 years

(OP)
Hi,
I need a help about a dressing machine.
on the machine there are two cards:
first card:
            S.A. Muller
            Machines-DUTILS
            Bienne-Suissa
Second card:
            Gebruder
            ZallaZ
            AKTIEN-GESELLSCHAFT
            GRENCH/SCHWIES
this machine is for dressing a grinding wheel.
I need to know the thread of the lead screw in this machine.
thanks a lot

RE: a dressing machine made befor 35 years

Is the screw accessible enough to just simply measure it?

It is better to have enough ideas for some of them to be wrong, than to be always right by having no ideas at all.

RE: a dressing machine made befor 35 years

It would appear to be foreign - start with metric??

RE: a dressing machine made befor 35 years

A dial indicator, some Jo blocks and a couple turns of the handwheel should give you enough information to calculate the pitch.

If this is profile dressing point you will need to address the the identification of the thread form very carefully as they are two thread forms normally used.  The first is the Centralizing Acme Thread Form or to a lesser degree the Trapezoidal Thread Form.  The Centralizing Thread Form requires some very specific
tolerances once you get the basic pitch and disasters.  I would get a reputable lead screw manufacturer to made me one from the old one.  Although I've never seen one I understand they do make
multiple start lead screws.

All our profile grinding equipment has the Acme Centralizing
Thread Form.

I have some Screw Pitch Qauges similar to the ones in this link that are a good starting point, putting you in the balpark, so you can refine your measurements.

Swiss machine - metric - if it looks like ACME it will be Trapezoidal thread. If it looks like reg, 60 deg thread measure from tip to tip in mm. Tip: measure the dia. and look up standard metric threads here:http://www.gewinde-normen.de/

RE: a dressing machine made befor 35 years

the thread is a Trapezoidal thread, and today and it is a Swiss machine

RE: a dressing machine made befor 35 years

(OP)
The thread is a Trapezoidal thread
The major diameter is 0.5440"
The pitch is 7 threads per inch

I had to order a good quality 3/8-24 die set for an aircraft part.  Everything seemed fine until I tried to use the "GO" guage.  The die was incorrectly labeled.  It was a double start thread and I had the devil of a time geeting it reordereed correctly because our buyer could not understand the distinction.

RE: a dressing machine made befor 35 years

You mean a double start is not better than a single start?  winky smile

I've been a buyer; it's not fun.

I have to agree. The double start thread form was a long time happening, simply because it was a little difficult to comprehend.  I have to confess that I walked around for sometime not admitting that I didn't completely understand it.
As I've h I've posted before the Differential Screw Micrometer gave me a little trouble at first, but since we used so many I had to understand them.
In the US an interesting use of the multi start thread is the gallon milk container cap.

junid,
I misstated in my last post as we use both the CTF and TTF from.  The unmodified machines have the TTF while the modified machines have the CTF.  I don't know why and the designer is no longer with  us, Cancer got him 3 months after he retired.
