External thread callout in a drawing?

External thread callout in a drawing?

External thread callout in a drawing?

(OP)
Hi,
8 years Solid Edge power user here, trying to stop the maddenning process... winky smile  I use SW2011 64bit on Win7-64.

I created a simple rod, 1.25" OD x 36" long.  I used a "Cosmetic Thread" on the feature to define it as 1-1/4" - NF thread.

Now, I show the part in a drawing.  The cosmetic thread shows up as expected (3/4 thin arc on the front view, etc).

Is there a way to create a note/dimension linked to the thread definition?  I did a fair amount of research and saw "Thread callout" should appear somewhere in the menus when a cosmetic thread is detected.  I can not find this command.  Can someone post a detailed step-through because I'm about to go mad here.  Such a simple task should really be straightforward...

Thanks!

RE: External thread callout in a drawing?

The note really isn't that smart.  It should come in as a model item with the cosmetic thread.  Basically you're better off to just make your own note in the drawing.

It's definetly something that Solidworks really needs to implement.

Thanks James,
A manual update is not what I was looking for, in 2011!

Actually, I just found the answer while poking around.  I right-clicked on the thin line which represents the cosmetic thread, and there was the "Insert Callout" command in the contextual menu.

Seems to WAE...I changed the model and the note updated.

@Matt : I agree, something that simple should be really straight forward.  Solid Edge does it with a similar command to the Hole wizard.  It recognize the cylinder diameter and matches (via an editable TXT file) a thread definition.  Adds a thread texture in shaded view and standard thread representation in drawings.

RE: External thread callout in a drawing?

Daofdesign,

SolidWorks has a function that recongizes cylinder diameter when the user applies a cosmetic thread in part mode.  In my view, that solution doesn't go nearly far enough.  I would like to see something much more powerful.

RE: External thread callout in a drawing?

Even adding the callout, it's still basically manually entered on creation of the cosmetic thread so it's 6 of one, half dozen of the other imo.
