Common structuralengineering standard specifications designations

Common structuralengineering standard specifications designations

Common structuralengineering standard specifications designations

(OP)
Hi,

I'm making a list of the common structural and civil engineering standard specification and designation that span ASTM, ACI, AWS, AASHTO, etc. The list will be something like:

ASTM  A36 - For steel plate, diamond plate, and bar stock
ASTM A153 - For galvanizing iron and steel hardware
ASTM A780 - For field touch up of galvanized finishes
AWS A5.1 - For steel electrodes
etc.

I appreciate your feedback..

Thanks

Why are you doing this?

I am creating this summary list for new engineers as part of getting their thoughts into various common specifications quickly. It will serve as a starting point for what common specification calls for.

Unless they understand the need and use of those specifications and standards, they are useless.  I see specifications written every day that have inappropriately referenced standards and specifications as well as outdated references.

This is an ongoing process and should be part of a comprehensive training and mentoring program.

I applaud your wanting to do something, just make sure it is worthwhile and not giving them a false sense of knowledge and application.

... or even withdrawn references...

see Unified Facilities Guide Specifications (UFGS), they have a fairly comprehensive list

Also, AISC publishes lists of appropriate ASTMs for structural shapes, anchor bolts, etc.
